The Impact of Marijuana Use on Oral Health: An Overview

With the legalization of marijuana in many parts of the world, its use has become more prevalent. While much attention is given to the potential physical and mental health effects of marijuana, its impact on oral health remains an important topic.

So what is the impact of marijuana use on oral health? Here’s an overview of how marijuana use can affect your teeth and gums and what it means for your oral health.

Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

One of the most common side effects of marijuana use is dry mouth. THC, the active component in marijuana, can inhibit saliva production, leading to an uncomfortable dry mouth [1].

Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health by washing away food particles and neutralizing acid, protecting against tooth decay and gum disease. Without sufficient saliva, the risk of cavities and gum disease increases.

Gum Disease

Marijuana smokers may be at a higher risk of gum disease [2]. The combination of smoke and the drying effect of marijuana on the oral cavity can lead to gum inflammation, also known as gingivitis. The substances in marijuana can also irritate gum tissue, leading to red or tender gums.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to more severe stages, including periodontitis, which can result in symptoms such as loose teeth, gum recession, and tooth loss.

Oral Cancer

While research on the direct link between marijuana use and oral cancer is ongoing, some studies suggest that long-term marijuana smokers may have an increased risk of developing oral cancer [3].

The potential carcinogenic effects of marijuana smoke and chronic exposure to smoke and its by-products can contribute to harmful changes in the oral tissues, potentially leading to a higher risk of cancer.

Tooth Decay

The drying effects of marijuana use on the oral cavity can accelerate tooth decay. The lack of saliva facilitates the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth, leading to enamel erosion and cavities.

Saliva also plays a vital role in remineralizing tooth enamel. Your saliva contains important minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus, that help keep teeth strong and act as buffers against the acids of what you eat and drink.

With dry mouth from marijuana use, less saliva is present to protect teeth, so tooth enamel damage and tooth decay are more likely [4].

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Marijuana use has been linked to teeth grinding and jaw clenching, also called bruxism. This involuntary habit can lead to tooth wear, jaw pain, sensitive teeth, gum recession, and even cracked or fractured teeth.

Researchers aren’t yet sure of the link between marijuana and bruxism, but it’s suspected that marijuana users may have increased anxiety and depression, which are both risk factors for bruxism, and so may be using cannabis to self-medicate [5].

Oral Infections

Because of dry mouth, marijuana users are at an increased risk for oral infections, such as oral thrush. However, cannabis use can also promote the growth of the bacteria that causes oral thrush, C. albicans [6].

The combination of dry mouth and the fact that cannabis can encourage bacterial growth puts marijuana users at a higher risk for oral infections such as oral thrush.

Be Aware of the Risks of Using Marijuana

As marijuana legalization grows, it’s essential to be aware of the risks of using this substance and its potential impacts on oral health. Dry mouth, gum disease, oral cancer, tooth decay, oral infections, and teeth grinding are all concerns that marijuana users should be aware of.

Maintaining a healthy oral hygiene routine, visiting the dentist regularly, and discussing specific concerns with healthcare professionals are essential steps to minimize potential oral health risks associated with marijuana use.
