A few months into traditional braces, those clear, removable Invisalign® trays can start looking pretty appealing. Being able to take your aligners out to eat, brush normally, and skip navigating around brackets and wires may sound like a welcome change. Luckily, starting orthodontic treatment with braces doesn’t necessarily mean you have to wear them until the very end. However, whether it makes sense depends on how your teeth and bite have progressed and what still needs to be corrected.
When Can You Switch From Braces to Invisalign®?
The biggest question when switching from braces to clear aligners is whether Invisalign can successfully handle the orthodontic work you still need.
Braces are often more effective for complicated issues, such as rotating certain teeth, closing larger gaps, or correcting significant bite problems. If your braces have already accomplished the more complex part of your treatment, your orthodontist may determine that clear aligners can take it from there. This means some patients who weren’t initially good candidates for Invisalign may become candidates after braces have done part of the work.
A switch from brackets to clear aligners may also be an option if your treatment plan changes or you’re having difficulty managing braces. However, changing systems simply for convenience isn’t always the best choice if braces are still needed to achieve specific tooth movement and bite adjustments.
Your orthodontist will look at your current tooth positions, bite, remaining corrections, and overall progress before deciding whether switching makes sense.
How Does the Transition Work?
If you’re approved to switch to clear aligners, your orthodontist will remove your braces and clean your teeth. Your orthodontist will then take digital scans of your smile to map out the remaining tooth movements and create a customized series of clear aligners.
Once your trays are ready, you will wear each set of aligners according to your orthodontist’s instructions (usually for most of the day and night). You’ll change to new aligners periodically as your teeth gradually move into their planned positions. Regular appointments let your orthodontist monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed.
Is Switching From Braces to Clear Aligners Right for You?
Clear aligners offer plenty of conveniences, but switching isn’t necessarily the fastest or most effective choice for everyone. Your remaining tooth movements, bite alignment, treatment progress, and ability to consistently wear your aligners all matter. Unlike braces, Invisalign® only works when the trays are actually in your mouth.
If you’re ready to say goodbye to brackets and wires, talk to your orthodontist. They can tell you whether you’ve reached a point where Invisalign® can take over and keep your treatment moving toward the smile you’ve been dreaming of.
